The Professional Lighting Design Convention took place in magical Paris earlier this month and what an experience it was.
Attending this convention was yet another first for me, and it surpassed all my expectations. Most people will cringe at the thought of sitting in seminars for 3 days straight, but I was quite excited to see what the global lighting industry had to offer. What better way to spend 3 days than to listen to the great designers talk about their passion, be surrounded by like-minded people, making new friends and all the while sipping on wine and enjoying the social nature of the lighting design community. But back to the real reason we attend PLDC, the lectures.
The line-up was amazing, with four lectures happening at the same time in different rooms. The choices were endless, with speakers talking passionately about how they run their companies, how they go about the design process, their research methodologies for further studies and many more inspirational topics. The talks were related to light in one way or another, and some opened the eyes to new possibilities. With the theme for this years PLDC being “Shift happens” it was all about lighting design for the future.
The quality of speakers was amazing and, being new in the industry, I have to admit that some of the names were just names to me, but after listening to them present I realised these are the ‘Frank Gehry's’, ‘Norman Fosters’, ‘Santiago Calatravas’ of the lighting industry.
One person that I was familiar with was of course Mark Major. I went to the lecture room an hour before his presentation and people were streaming in. By the time he started presenting the auditorium was bursting out of its seams, with people sitting on the floor and gaping through open doors. Major’s talk was on ‘Communicating Light’ and he gave a better understanding of methods of communication using light, and how to ‘paint’ with light and put together impactful presentations.
Though there are many more people worth mentioning, I will stop there as I might get lost in the magical world of PLDC and end up writing a book.
PLDC, the annual convention created for the global lighting design community, that brings together lighting designers, architects, researchers, universities, industries and clients, creates a platform to meet, learn and discuss the wonderful world of lighting design and opens new and innovative possibilities for the future of the lighting profession.
I am eagerly looking forward to continuing to learn about this amazing world I find myself in. Be sure to check out my gallery of all the moments I captured.
