It's a funny thing, stepping out on your own. Fueled by passion, optimism and a need for fulfillment, I decided to step away from the proverbial safety net of employment into the scary world of entrepreneurship.
At first, you feel invincible, unbeatable, not by any barrier real or imagined, then you have those moments when you wake up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night and think to yourself, "am I an idiot, or am I an idiot." All things aside, this can be said about the birth of Light.Func:
Plenty of friends, family, peers and the anonymous asked me why I ventured out and creating a lighting design studio and my answer is always the same -
- there is nothing I love more than to talk, dream, create, discuss, get angered by, flabbergasted, laugh about light. I am impassioned with spreading the knowledge of light, its benefits and against its horrific use.
- there is a huge misconception on the market that any other architect or designer of any discipline can also effectuate good (and correct) lighting design, and I am one of many who is pledging their life to diffusing this misconception
- whether this is taken in a negative connotation by the lighting design community at large or not, it is the truth, smaller projects and clients suffer by having no access to this service. Larger studios are unable to find any economically viable solution to working on smaller projects where budget and size are a constraint.
- I don't like the idea of conformity in creativity. Specialisation is a choice - I have decided to specialise in improving love, life and laughter through light. As such we do not decide to typify the projects we work on, we work on everything - retail, F&B, hospitality, urbanscapes, commercial residential. It is the essence of the projects that we conform to - boutique hotels, eco-lodges, cafe concepts, singular and unique concept stores, smaller residences, holiday homes, lighting design initiatives in conjunction with events, institutions, organisations.
This is what we stand for: quality lighting design for the smaller project - small standing for size and budget. Equality for all to avail lighting design. Unconformed approach to lighting design.
We will be publishing educational content, involved in all aspects of the design community at large, as well as discuss general content even unrelated to actual lighting design - simply because passion knows no boundaries!
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
