Theme: Year of Zayed
Following the success of our first 2 editions of Light.ication, the third edition returned with even greater support and enthusiasm. Firstly a huge thank you to Messe Frankfurt and all their staff for organising this initiative jointly with us. We would like to thank all the sponsors, mentors and Studio partners who show their dedication in educating the Lighting Designers of tomorrow. In line with the national theme of the UAE, the theme was set as 'THE YEAR OF ZAYED'. The teams were tasked with creating an installation that reflected the honourable Sheikh. This year's initiative was judged by Brendan Keely of the SLL, Martin Lupton and Sharon Stammers of Light Collective and Dan Lallam of Zumtobel Group.
What the judges had to say:
For some of us, it was the first time judging the Light.ication series, but for one particular individual (yes you, Brendan) it was the 3rd year in a row. A lot of debating went on, but in the end we couldn't pick one winner. The installations themselves were an exercise in creativity, hard work and of course a lot of excitement. Some teams had stayed up for 3 days to finish them.
This was the first time that there was a tie, with joint winners Team 4 and 5. Both installations showed real creativity and an almost surreal reproduction of Sheikh Zayed's life, with the feeling of him being there, always felt, no matter where you stood. A truly spiritual experience. Well done to the mentors and students!
