Theme: The Culture of Light

As part of her passion for the lighting community, and education, Sakina Dugawalla-Moeller, approached Messe Frankfurt with an initiative to have lighting installations at the Light Middle East exhibition. The consensus was a mentorship program from the independent lighting industry for students and universities in UAE encouraging raising awareness for lighting design as well as give hands-on experience to the next generation of upcoming designers; from how a concept is developed, through the process of design, and seeing a final product.

In it's first edition, Light.ication's theme was The Culture of Light. Below are time-lapse videos of some of the installations. Although it did not start out as a competition, students and faculty members petitioned to have Light.ication become a competition, and so we concurred! The result was light.ific! And the winner of the first edition was Nathan Savage Lighting Design, with his team of mixed students from  American University of Dubai and Manipal University.

What the judges had to say:
What a great initiative! In our collective years as professionals, we have not seen anything like it. The enthusiasm of the students (and mentors) was almost electric. All the installations had a completely different take on the theme, which basically was about What the Culture of light is to you, in a melting pot that is the UAE. What set the winning installation apart, was its simplicity, thought and final implementation. An infinity of reflection, with handmade lanterns - no better way we ourselves could have done it!
